Maputo Ayuba Mensah resides in Colorado where he performs and teaches traditional
West African dancing, drumming and singing. Maputo is the artistic director, choreographer
and master dancer of Logo Ligo performance troupe, based in Boulder, CO. he also
teaches full time at the University of Colorado, Naropa University, Bantaba World
Dance and Music Studio, and Mosaic Movement Arts.
Maputo has a rare combination of qualities. He is a dynamic performer with intense,
relentless energy and enthusiasm. He is also unique in that he is equally adept
at at drumming as he is dancing. The passion and intensity that he brings to his
very extensive knowledge of his cultural art creates a rare and fascinating energy
in his performances. Maputo also has remarkable skill and maturity as a teacher, as he has
spent many years teaching an international body of students and he has developed
cross-cultural teaching skills with precision and humor
Born into an artistic family in Ghana, West Africa, Maputo was blessed with the
opportunity to learn the traditional performing arts of his country's rich folklore
and religious traditions. At the age of five, he began learning to dance and drum.
It was not long before he was to join the Akrowa Dance Ensemble of Ghana and the
Royal Ga Troupe of Ghana. Maputo took the opportunity to apprentice directly under
the world-renowned master drummer Mustapha Tetty Addy, who supported extensive
talent and knowledge of Ghanaian performance art. Maputo's other artistic influences
include Chuck Davis, J.C. Commodore, Amano Ofori, Obo Addy and Kpani Addy.
